Recently Eric Batten(Service Representative in Raleigh), participated and placed second in the Regional USA Skills Competition held in the Greensboro Coliseum.  This competition showcases safety awareness, troubleshooting ability, soldering skills as well as overall industry knowledge.   Eric was one of 5 students selected to represent Wake Tech's HVAC-R program.  Another Wake Tech student finished fourth in the competition.  Wake Tech also had a strong showing in the Plumbing competition placing students second through fifth.

The 50th annual SkillsUSA North Carolina State Leadership and Skills Conference was held in Greensboro, NC April 21-23, 2015 at the Greensboro Coliseum and Koury Convention Center.  Over 2,500 students, instructors, industry members, and volunteers were on hand for the largest showcase of Career and Technical Education in the state.  Nearly 1,800 high school and postsecondary students competed in over 106 different skills and leadership contests.

 

 

A Coach's Words

The Greenville team was very fortunate to have ECU's Head Baseball Coach, Cliff Godwin join us for breakfast today at the City Hotel and Bistro. He is a Greene County native, so he got to reconnect with many of our field staff who reside there in "GC-God's Country."
 

Coach Godwin was recently awarded Coach of the Year by his peers in the league and took ECU to their league championship and made the first round to the World Series in Omaha. 

He shared how his first coaching job was as a volunteer assistant coach at UNC-W. They were hosting a tournament of the top 150 players east of the Mississippi there in Wilmington. His responsibilities were to drag the field, do laundry and then scramble into the stands and take scouting notes. Not too far away from where Cliff was sitting  was a boyhood friend who was an assistant coach at Vanderbilt University who was there with the head coach from Vanderbilt. The head coach had been observing his hustle throughout the day. He leaned over and asked his assistant, "who is that guy busting his hump down there?" The assistant replied, "He's the volunteer assistant coach here. We used to play ball together... great guy." The head coach said to his assistant, "We need a Head of Baseball Operations at Vanderbilt. Do you think he would be interested?" That was 2002... 13 years ago. Nowadays he is a championship coach. He said the following to our team...

 

"Sometimes you feel like you are doing a menial job out there by yourself and that it doesn’t matter. But as you hustle even when nobody is looking- that is integrity and that will take you farther than anything in your career."

 

He encouraged the field group to stay strong and always strive to be champions.

PSG and ReBuilding Together

Recently PSG Raleigh and CMS had the opportunity to partner with  Rebuilding Together of the Triangle and some of our local vendors to help a military veteran and his sister living on New Rand Rd in Garner. His house was in rough shape, so they rolled up their sleeves on a Saturday afternoon to help out with some of the following projects:

-          HVAC System Replacement

-          Demolition Work

-          Flooring & Trim Work

-          Painting & Priming

Answer: There are a couple actually :

1) You can do anything you want to as long as you really

put your mind to it and stay determined.

2) Find out who you are and do it on purpose!

Answer: I appreciate it most when my teammates are as passionate

What is your proudest accomplishment at Piedmont?

Answer: I'm most proud of the relationships I've built with our customers. I've been

able to consult with many of them on significant projects as a trusted advisor.

These relationships open up the opportunities for Piedmont even

beyond Special Projects.

 

 

If stranded on a desert island what three things would you bring?

Answer: My iPhone,  a double order of hot buffalo wings

and of course, a psychometric chart.

Chip In to Win!

Last Friday, PSG Raleigh sponsored a hole at the 2015 BOMA Golf Tournament.  Players were challenged in a “Chip In to Win” contest where they tried to chip a small beach ball into a water cooler. Those who were successful were entered into a drawing for a $100 gift card to Golfsmith!  Everyone had a great time testing their skills!

 

BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association), has the mission “to enhance the level of professionalism and ethics in the commercial real estate industry and to support its members through education, advocacy and the development of strategic relationships.”

What makes a great workday?

Answer: Unfortunately problem solving. Problem solving is challenging.

 It gives you a reason to research the history of the problem,

learn about all the nuts and bolts and how it works. Then you are able to use

sound engineering principals to find the solution.

 

 

What characteristic do you value most in your coworkers?

Answer: Brainstorming. The ability to use a brainstorming exercise

to systematically step through a process.

Lee Alphin is a great brainstorming partner.

 

 

What is your proudest accomplishment at Piedmont?

Answer: Creating a tech measurement sheet.

This measures tech accomplishment. It allows me to quantify their

work and use productively in performance reviews.

This allows for positive measurement of expectations.

 

 

If stranded on a desert island what three things would you bring?

Answer: A phone, computer with wifi and a cup of coffee.
