The True Spirit of Christmas

The We Care team in Greenville partnered with the Pediatric Oncology Department a Vidant Hospital to gather gifts for a boy and girl that will be cared for by that department of the Christmas holiday.

Below is a caption from Mary Harrell (wife of Dusty Harrell-Technician w PSG)

Girl: 8 year old named "Gabby" that has been recently been diagnosed with ATRT (Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid Tumor), which is an extremely rare type of brain tumor. She will begin her intense treatment after the holidays are over. As we are hoping that she has a very memorable and enjoyable holiday with her family.  Below is the wish list that her mother sent to me:
“….wish list consists of Disney Descendants characters. At Kohls there's Descendants collection line. Her shirt size is x-large girls 14/16. Her pants size is 14/16. At toys r us and other stores at the Decedents characters and karaoke machine. Her favorite character is Mal. But anything Descendants is her wish list.”

Boy: 2 year old named Lawson has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). His treatment will last about 38 months & he is currently into his 4th month of treatment. He has done well but has many more visits & hospitalization in front of him. He is quite the little hero.  Through research & growth in medicine, ALL is a very curable childhood cancer.  Below is the wish list that his mother provided:

“…As you know our little hero loves anything Thomas the Train, superhero (captain America is his favorite) and he loves books.  He is working on learning his letters and colors so anything that helps with that is great too.”

It is a terrible time for these families and children during the Holidays.  The parents have to stop work to be with their child and somehow make "ends meet" to provide for their families.  The parents have normal jobs as you and me, and are sacrificing tremendously.  Pam and I met these two brave children and their families and it is something I hope no one ever has to face.

With the help of the entire Greenville branch, I believe we succeeded in fulfilling these children's wishes.  Fortunately, little Lawson will eventually live a normal life. Gabby's illness is severe and most likely she will visit Heaven and be free of her illness before the next Christmas.

General Manager HB Moore’s words capture it all…

"I was truly moved at our luncheon today to hear of how our Greenville team overflowed blessings on the families of the two children at VIDANT Children's Hospital today. It is a day they will always remember. Your kindness towards those in need makes this our finest hour. I am proud to be apart of this group of fine folks.” –HB Moore
